How to Achieve the Boho Chic Look in your Living Room
If there is one current interiors trend I feel most affinity with, it is Boho Chic (despite getting ‘Totally Eighties’ in Emily Henderson’s quiz – nooooo). Not to be confused with just Boho, which really is just an updated version of the old hippy style – lots of tribal textiles, woven baskets, mixing patterns and poufs – Boho Chic takes just enough boho-ness to make it interesting and adds the chic factor to make it cool.
You with me so far?
So how do you achieve the Boho Chic look in your own home? I’m taking inspiration from Furniture Village, who really have nailed the look: Furniture Village: Boho Chic, SS16 Lookbook
Furniture Village recommend keeping the colour palette neutral, and limiting furniture to one or two simple pieces (the ‘chic’) and then adding texture and personality with quirky off-beat accessories, patterned cushions and natural textiles (the ‘boho’).
This pared-back approach really allows the beauty and individuality of the furniture and carefully-chosen accessories to shine – doesn’t that Ercol Love Seat look just stunning set against the pale walls and ethnic wall pieces? As Elma Malik, Cabinet Buyer for Furniture Village explains:
“The clean simplicity of this beautifully crafted wooden loveseat is the centrepiece for this calm, artistic look. Choose earthy neutrals and natural textures, be selective with eye-catching accessories and add warmth and texture with a luxurious rug.”

A Berber-style rug is, in my opinion, essential for any Boho Chic living room, as is some greenery in the form of plants or loose arrangements of wildflowers (cow parsley is very popular at the moment!). A recent addition to my own home is a large Kentia palm (left), which is perfect for this look.
With these elements in place, you can then allow your own personality to shine through by adding the boho elements that say something about you and your style. It might be some old painted family portraits, or objects you have brought back from your travels, or items from your childhood that hold precious memories. These personal touches will make the room your own, and a joy to live in.

To recap, here are my (and Furniture Village’s) tips on:
How To Achieve The Boho Chic Look In Your Living Room
- Keep your base colour palette neutral, clean and simple
- Limit your furniture to one or two key beautifully crafted pieces
- Add warmth and texture with a patterned rug
- Mix in artistic touches such as oversized vases, patterned cushions and natural textiles
- Finish with personal items such as travel mementoes and family treasures to make the scheme your own
What do you think of the Boho Chic look, is this a trend you would like to create in your own home?

Thanks Becky – the bench is Ercol, but sadly not mine as the photo is from Furniture Village – only the plant photo and the small one of the leaves in vase are mine! Thanks for popping by x

I too love the boho chic trend, although I think it’s one that will stick around for a while, as you can update pieces as you go along.. it’s a very organic process which I think adds oodles of personality to a space. Thanks for sharing these styling tips! K x
I agree Keira – I don’t think it’s ever gone away since the 70s really, just shaken and stirred a bit by each generation 🙂 x

I love this look ever since although I tend to add more colour and a few more bits and pieces from my travels to mess it up a bit. Adore the rug. That is on my wish list for sure.
More colour and more travel bits adds more personality – I like that the base is a kind of blank canvas to allow you to do that. Thanks for stopping by Maxine!

Oh I love this, it is all very liveable and relaxed. The styling by Furniture Village is great and I would love to get this look in my front room.
Thanks Antonia – it is the look I am going for myself, mixed with a bit of mid-century modern though as my sofa and chair have to stay for now!

It’s lovely isn’t it – that’s half the problem with writing blog posts for lovely furniture, by the time I’ve finished I’ve convinced myself I can’t live without piece x, y or z 🙂 Thanks for #HomeEtc! x
ah its very nice but im all about bright colours and lots of white…not a pattern to be seen
That goes with your sunny personality and bright outlook on life Becky! I’m all about pattern and neutral and earthy colours, don’t know what that says about me, boring 🙂 xx

I LOVE that loveseat! I’m a big fan of ercol, currently have a two-seater sofa that needs a bit of an overhaul! #HomeEtc
It’s lovely isn’t it. I’m a big fan too, but sadly don’t own any! Lucky you 🙂 Thanks for popping over from #HomeEtc
Lovely piece Molly, I gasped when I saw the Florence Broadhurst cushion on the Ercol, she was one of my first design passions. This is a style I feel so at home with, I love that it never looks tear sheet as it requires your own personality to contextualise it. Love the shot of your own vase and animal figurines, did you get those on travels?
I love Florence Broadhurst too! (I’ve got a book about her – what an incredible life she led). The little animals were a present from my son brought back from a school trip to Malawi – they move around, but usually on my kitchen windowsill
