Today I watched the documentary SuperJuice Me! in which 8 people with chronic health problems swap their normal diets for 28 days on only fruit and vegetable juices – with remarkable results. The central premise of the film is that modern medicine is not the solution to many chronic diseases, which are better treated by removing toxins from the body and going back to a food that is as close to nature as possible: low-intervention food.
At the time of writing this post you can watch the documentary for free, and I totally encourage you to do so. It’s about an hour long, but if time is of the essence you could watch the first twenty minutes then the last ten and still get the full gist of it.
Inspired by the documentary, and realising I’ve not been giving my Vitamix much to do of late, I raided my fridge and fruit bowl and made this smoothie for breakfast:
Green Smoothie with Coconut Milk and Spirulina
I don’t believe in recipes or measurements for juices or smoothies, as part of the fun is experimentation and then you have a different drink every time, but here is what I threw in, in rough quantities:
1 stick celery
1 banana
handful of blueberries
cup of frozen mango, pineapple and kiwi
about 10 ice cubes
cup of water
two heaped tablespoons of thick coconut milk
handful of fresh parsley
tablespoon of linseeds
tablespoon of spirulina powder
I was actually surprised at how delicious this turned out to be – I was expecting it to be more like swamp juice, after a previous experiment with spirulina powder (more about that in another blog post, coming soon). But it was lovely (served with virtual ‘ ;)) and reminded me just how easy it is to make nutritious but also tasty drinks that can really be a boost to health and well-being.
So please do watch the video, dust off the juicer or blender, and get some goodness inside you this Sunday
