Home Office Inspiration and Beginnings
For the last few months I’ve been saying that I am going to carve out a home office space in my spare bedroom. I’ve been pinning inspirational images, reading blog posts about home office transformations, and … doing nothing to make mine happen. Gah!
There is a reason, which is one great big wooden wardrobe, left by my landlady, taking up the very space where my home office is destined to be. It’s a beast – I’ve just taken out the photograph I had put in this post as it is not pretty (I might show you sometime in a before/after post when the room is finished!).
It’s been like the proverbial albatross around my neck, however, this weekend I decided action must be taken. The top of the wardrobe housed boxes of photograph albums – which I don’t want to throw out but don’t feel like sorting though – so these got relegated to the attic. The wardrobe is still standing, but at least I can now ask my landlady if she can take it away.
I still don’t know what my home office will look like, but my lovely daughter has donated me a desk, and of course Artie (lamp) is standing by and waiting for his turn to be of service, and so the beginnings of my home office are starting to take shape:
So far, so black and white. The images of home offices that I have pinned are all very minimalist, and I’d like to keep it that way (as in my day job I work in a shared and very cluttered office, which drives me mad!). But I do think I need to introduce some colour – perhaps a coloured Eames reproduction chair is called for (rather than my white one), and some wall art.
And here is a little wish list of accessories that have been tickling my fancy:
- Becky Kemp hand paints these wooden kokeshi dolls – I’d like a whole line up of the artists we feature on , or at least the ones Becky has already painted: Louise Bourgeois, Frida Kahlo and Yayoi Kusama (below):
- I’m also coveting this cool blue pen and stand from A Beautiful Space‘s new online shop:
- and a whole host of stationery and storage items from Paperchase:
I’m sure over the next little while I will reign in my stationery obsession, and start thinking more clearly as to how I want to space to look, as at the moment there is no clear aesthetic. But first, I must get rid of that wardrobe …

ooh you have some lovely ideas and thank you for featuring my shop!

Hope the shop goes well Becky, you have chosen some gorgeous items to sell x
Yes Molly! You’ve started. The hardest bit done. Whoop! I’d so get a screwdriver out and take that wardrobe down… but i’m very impatient. Can’t wait to see your office. I’m just re-doing my own and it’s nearly done. Eeee!
Ooh, look forward to seeing yours Karen – though I can imagine I’ll be stealing all your ideas instead of coming up with any of my own!

Oooh well done for taking those first tentative steps! I find that I always have more motivation when I just do SOMETHING ANYTHING to start a project. I hope you sort out the wardrobe situation soon (I’d be taking it to bits myself) because it’s already looking great xx
Thank you Kimberley – I had to make a start and post on here to be accountable, so got to get a move on now! Have contacted landlady about removing the wardrobe … 🙂

I’ve been meaning to do mine as well for so long…. Have plenty of inspiration but still done nothing about it – typical! Now you’ve made me want to go back and tackle it 😉 x
We can do it – I’ll race you 🙂

Could we paint the wardrobe ? does it have potential ? Take the doors off and make it part of the office ? No ! Chop it up and get started with the lovely ideas you have. xx
I’ve contacted my landlady and asked her to come and take it away! Spurred on by all comments on this blog post – kind of why I posted this half-baked post because I knew I’d then be accountable and have to to get a move on 🙂

I love that lamp! I think a colourful eames chair would brighten it up nicely, how about a pin board above the desk where you can pin inspiration and add a bit more colour and interest? X
Love the inspiration board. Can’t wait to see x

Oh I am looking forward to seeing it once it has finished. I have been working on my office space as it is in my lounge. It is that balance between being cluttered and then giving you a space that is practical and helps you work. I am trying to make mine a pretty cluttered space!!

Absolutely the best thing you’ll do for yourself if get your new workspace sorted-you’ll feel so much more inspired (mine has certainly done it for me!) I’d section of a piece of wall for pegging or pinning up ideas/to-dos/inspiration or find some colourful art to frame. Enjoy the process!

A home office that you love is so important! One day I’d love to have a studio in the bottom of my garden. Having a work space you love always helps with productivity too

I’m dreaming about my office-to-be too! I have so much sorting out to do though before I can even begin (it’s currently a playroom). I love the look of your desk and chair, and would really like something similar. And the possibilities for gorgeous stationary are endless, aren’t they?

Ah I LOVE those little dolls, so cute! I have been doing our home office for over a year now. So I feel your pain. It’s getting there but I fear it will never be finished. Love your chair, looks so comfy too. Becky xx #HomeEtc

Good luck with the revamp – looking forward to seeing it take shape, and if you manage to reign in the stationery addiction (I hope not, looking at other people’s means I don’t buy quite so much! 🙂 ) #homeetc

Hello Molly! Thanks so much for linking up with us! My house was hit with the dreaded winter sick bug last week so I’m so behind with my comments. Just catching up now! SO looking forward to seeing what you do!! As you know, with the advent of my garden office, I am OBSESSED with anything ‘office’ at the mo. Am literally dreaming about how I’m going to kit mine out!! 😉
PS #HomeEtc is live tomorrow from 6.30am xx
