As the evenings start to draw in (I know, it’s happened all too soon!), it’s time to think about making your living room homely and cosy. UPVC doors will help keep the heat in, but there is lots more you can do to achieve a cosy feel, and still stay bang up to date with current trends in interior design. Here’s how:

Homely Living Room Autumn/Winter 2014

1. Banish the Beige

One of the key trends for 2014 was the eschewal of neutrals in favour of saturated colours, like plum and navy. A  in a rich colour will immediately signal comfort and luxury, and bring your living room bang up to date.

2. Light-coloured Wood

This year light-coloured woods, like oak and maple, replaced darker woods like mahogany for a more contemporary look. Furniture in a honey-coloured wood will update your decor, but also add warmth, perfect for autumn.

3. Perfect Pattern

Adding elements of pattern will instantly update a room. There are lots of great wallpapers to choose from, but even a rug or cushions in a contemporary pattern will liven up a living room. This season was all about modern takes on traditional patterns, such as florals and chintz; prints inspired by mid-century modern designs, and geometric patterns like chevrons.

4. Tripod Floor Lamps

Soft lighting is essential for cosy autumnal rooms, and this can be achieved by using a variety of lighting types, such as floor and table lamps. Tripod lamps are very much on trend, and will give a nice glow to a corner of your living room in the evenings.

5. Tactile Texture

Add interest with touchable and sculptural textures, like this knitted pouf from Habitat. Anything knitted will signal cosyness, so add a chunky throw for added homeliness.

6. Candles

Yes, it’s time to light some candles in the autumn evenings. Tealight holders with a silvered or mercury finish will complement the rich tones of the season, and will send flickers of candlelight around your room for a magical homely feel.

My final tip for a homely feel to your living room is to add personal belongings. Nothing speaks of homeliness more than the signs that a room has been well-lived in: books half-read  left on the side, slippers under the coffee table, a photo of your loved ones in a carefully-chosen frame. Following trends will only go so far towards creating a homely home, but if you add the things you love, then it will be your home, not one out of the pages of a magazine (or blog!)
