Introducing: We Are Not A Muse

For longer than I can remember now, I’ve been promising to start an art history blog, to indulge that side of my interests. Well, I’ll finally gone and done it. Today sees the official launch of , a website dedicated to the celebration of women in the arts.

Even though I have worked as an academic, I still believe that art and art history should be accessible at all, and the aim of this blog is to be informative and enjoyable without using complicated jargon or alienating readers by being too high-brow. The focus is on women creatives, who have often been overlooked in the histories of art or relegated to the position of muse, hence the title, We Are Not A Muse.

In the spirit of much female creativity, this blog is a collaborative one, brought to you by a core team of myself (as Mary, my christened name and the one I use for work and when I am being serious!); Clara; Kerry; Kirsty and Jamie – all past students of mine on an Art History undergraduate course, including an Art and Gender module. It is testament to their enthusiasm and intelligence that this site is up and running, and now I’m playing catch up as I’ve yet to write a post!

But I have built the site, the first I’ve ever built from scratch (I’ve had help with this Molly and the Princess one) so I am pretty chuffed with how it’s all working so far, on all devices. But do let me know if you spot any glitches – it is early days for my web-building and I am still learning.
