Magpie Monday: Vintage Leather Music Bag – Upcycled (Literally!)
Hello Magpie Mondayers, it’s been a while!
I have been working like crazy, but this weekend I managed to get out for a Saturday cycle, stopping off for a mooch around the nearby town of Topsham. I am thinking of moving to live in Topsham, so of course, I needed to check out what it had to offer in the way of second-hand shops!

There was an abundance of treasures to be found in the Antiques centre on the Quay, and if I do move to Topsham, I can imagine I will lose many hours of my life to browsing in there. But my ‘catch of the day’, a vintage leather music bag, came from a little second-hand shop on the main street:
Unfortunately I didn’t take a ‘before’ photo – it was very tired looking and I was straight on it with leather food as soon as I could. I haven’t touched the metal bar that secures the top yet though, so still work to be done.
According to the inscription inside the bag, it belonged to a Gladys Gilbert of Belfast, who penned her name in beautiful calligraphy on 3 June 1923. Perhaps Gladys got the bag on the occasion of passing a music exam, or entrance to college? I hope she wouldn’t mind that I am not going to use it for sheet music.
As soon as I saw it I knew exactly what I would use it for – on the Princess! I’ve been lusting after leather bicycle accessories for quite a while, but they are expensive. Anyway, I’d much rather repurpose and ‘upcycle’ a vintage find – especially as it only cost me £6!
I’ve not thought how to attach it properly yet, so this is just a mock up – but doesn’t it look good?
Thank you Topsham, I think you and I are going to be good friends.

That is the most stylish pannier I have ever seen! I’m sure Gladys would approve. What a gorgeous inscription, I think it would set me off into finding all about her and her life.
