Naturalmat:
for an organic night’s sleep

MOLLY

18 July 2016

are a company local to me in Devon, whose HQ I have cycled past many a time. Situated in a boat builder’s yard, near Topsham, its location gives a clue as to the company’s origins. Beginning as manufacturers of custom-made natural mattresses for boats, Naturalmat now make organic mattresses for all beds, from babies’ moses baskets to adult sizes, as well as a variety of beds, bases and headboards, and a natural bedding range to complete the natural sleep experience.

Last week I went along to their showroom and factory, with some fellow bloggers, to find out more about the company, their products, and the processes behind their production.

Naturalmat founders Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall told us all about the company’s history, and showed us around the factory, where mattresses and toppers were in full production. This video explains the ethos of the company and how the mattresses are made:

In the factory, we met some of the people that feature in the video, who Peter introduced to us by name. They clearly take pride in their work, and it was lovely to meet them and see the mattresses and toppers being made.

Afterwards, in the showroom, we tested out the mattresses for ourselves. They come in two types, Natural Fibre (for a firm, denser feel) or Pocket Spring (for a springier feel), and each type can be either soft, medium or firm. Here’s what they look like in cross section:

After much testing and a little bouncing, I decided I liked the Natural Fibre Mohair (a firm mattress) the best, but with a soft wool topper. Bliss. I think I stayed lying on that bed just a little too long, I might even have started dreaming…

Back at home I have been trying out Naturalmat’s ‘Nest’ Pillow, a wool-filled pillow that is stitched across the centre to help with the correct alignment of the spine and neck. A nice reminder of my morning at Naturalmat, and the perfect place to lay my head and count Dartmoor sheep …

Thanks to Naturalmat for this behind-the-scenes tour. You can find out lots more on the website.

All images above are mine, taken at Naturalmat, but I leave you with some press images of Naturalmat beds and mattresses, so you can see them in all their glory. Enjoy!
