Following on from my recent post, which looked at ceramic-coated saucepans as a healthier alternative to potentially harmful Teflon, it is now time to turn my attention to frying pans, and another type of eco-friendly coating.

This time it was the turn of my frying pan to be replaced, with the . This uses a PFOA-free coating called ETERNA, developed in the USA, which is non-stick, scratch-resistant and easy to clean, and like ceramic, doesn’t need as high a heat as you might be used to, so saving gas/electric too.

Ozeri Stainless Steel Earth Pan Review:

Ozeri Earth Pan Stainless Steel Molly and the Princess

I was impressed by the look and feel of this pan. It’s a lovely shiny stainless steel on the outside, and the handle is strongly riveted on, so it feels solid and a good weight in the hand. The handle is perhaps my favourite bit, it really feels nice to hold, very tactile and ergonomic. The sides of the pan are gently sloped, which I’m not used to, but this is great for tossing stirfries around like a professional chef (when I tried this with my old straight-sided pan the ingredients just stayed put without flipping and I looked like a right idiot!).

The saucepan comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty (Ozeri will replace the pan at any point in its lifetime if it proves defective, but not if misused or abused). There are full instructions on looking after the pan, important if they non-stick is to remain fully functional, and – which I thought was a nice touch – a felt pan protector that you put inside the pan when storing it, so anything you place on top of it will not scratch it.

My verdict:

This is a nice pan, at a very reasonable price (currently £29.99 on Amazon UK). It feels nice to hold, and its non-stick qualities work a treat. In the photo above (bottom left), you can see me using the pan to cook home-made chipotle beef burgers (minced beef, onions, herbs, flaked chipotle chillis, and seasoning, shaped into burgers). I didn’t need to use anywhere near the amount of oil I put in the pan, but it ran off nicely to the side. The only down-side of the super non-stick properties of this pan though is that it’s hard to get hold of the blighters in it – I’m used to my burgers sticking to the bottom and staying put (such is the state of my old frying pan that the Earth Pan replaces)! It washes up a treat, so all in all I consider this an excellent buy.
