Changing Art Prints with SwitchArt

As you know I love art and its display, so I was intrigued when I heard about SwitchArt, a clever new product which consists of a magnetic frame with interchangeable prints – you can either have your own images printed or choose from hundreds of designs.

And there are literally hundreds, ranging in subject matter and style from photography to fine art prints – I spent many hours deliberating before deciding on these two graphic images from early twentieth-century Vienna, the iconic posters for the Cabaret Fledermaus and Fromme’s Calendar.

Now as I work with art and professionally-framed works every day, I was a little bit skeptical about this product before I tried it – I thought that because magnetic, the prints might have a glossy finish, and that they might be a good idea for say student rooms, but not for an art snob like me 🙂 But I was very pleasantly surprised!

The prints have a matt finish and are very good quality as is the frame. The set came with one print already in the frame, and the other rolled ready to apply. To change, you simply remove the print in the frame with a handy suction pad, then line up the top of the replacement print with the top of the frame, and roll into place.

et voilà!:

The set I chose is the medium size, 46 x 61 cm but there is also a smaller, 30 x 41 cm, or larger, 61 x 81 cm size.

The frames are fitted so that you can hand either in landscape or portrait format, so it will work with any prints you buy. The attention to detail is great – they even come with felt pads so the wall is not damaged, a feature I would expect from a professional framer but quite often missed.

I still think this SwitchArt is a great idea for teenagers’ and young adults’ rooms – I know my taste in art changed a lot during my teens and twenties, and with this system you don’t need to worry about the costs of framing each time a new print is bought, or worse still, the dreaded blutack marks on walls from posters! But I also think the system is good for all – from children’s rooms right through to adults’. I’m very happy with mine.

One teeny niggle – some of the designs are not correctly attributed. These prints for example, are classified as being by Alphonse Mucha, the Czech designer, where as actually they are by Viennese artists. The Fledermaus poster was designed by Bertold Löffler in 1907, and the Fromme one by Koloman Moser in 1903. Apart from that, all good!

Do have a look at all the sets or prints available, or perhaps design your own. These would make wonderful Christmas presents don’t you think?

Review Post: I received a SwitchArt set for review; no payment was received and all images and words are my own, and honest.
